Adapting to Change 1

I enjoyed a great conversation with Tim HJ Rogers from Adapt Consulting Company this week. You can find a video recording of the whole conversation on Youtube, an audio version on Apple Podcasts, and a few highlights plus a rough outline of each 10 minute segment below.

“I was thrilled to have Tim F Nash on my podcast and found our conversation so engaging that I’ve invited him back for another episode. I’m eager to dive deeper into the topics we discussed and continue our fascinating dialogue.

“Language serves as a vital tool for communication, shaping our perceptions of the world and influencing the narratives that define our values and the way we navigate life. The historical development of language plays a significant role in this process.

“I was particularly moved by the story that compared counting in Chinese and French. This comparison highlights the profound impact language has, not only on children learning a foreign language but on everyone’s perception of the world, our history, and how we communicate our values and understand our place—and that of others—in the world. It fosters a sense of belonging, whether it delineates ‘us’ versus ‘them’ or builds a sense of community.

“The saying that the US and the UK are “two nations divided by a common language” aptly illustrates that even among English-speaking countries, nuances in context, meaning, and purpose in communication can differ significantly. This divergence is even more pronounced across different languages. Exploring these differences is crucial, especially in an era characterized by a global economy, advanced technology, AI, and rapid change, where data is global but meaning remains local.

“Tim offers a fresh perspective on thinking, feeling, and being. While our discussions focused predominantly on AI, we also delved into various issues arising from cultural differences, historical contexts, and language diversity. This is particularly relevant because AI, especially large language models, is primarily based on English and Chinese languages and their respective histories.

“Over the course of two podcasts, we explored how this might narrow our vision, create opportunities, and necessitate compromises. Significant ethical and moral issues emerge when intelligence is grounded in specific languages and histories.”
